About 60 people from the Anglican, Baptist, Methodist and Gospel Lifeboat denominations joined together for an act of worship in the Winterslow Village Hall on the theme of One Hope, One Faith, taking the parable of the foolish and wise builders of houses on the shifting sand and the rock to emphasise the need to remember that Jesus is Our Rock and Saviour and we all, irrespective of our backgrounds and liturgy, worship the one true God. The service was led by Michael and included some lively songs taken from Spring Harvest, an opportunity for different church members to get together and discuss world and church issues, a testimony from the Baptist Pastor, Pater Salisbury, and a talk by Duncan Moody, Methodist Lay Preacher on the Luke parable. The Rev. Elizabeth Moore-Bick led the intercessionary prayers with Peter and readings were given by members of the Methodist and Gospel Lifeboat churches. The children built a brilliant house from cardboard under the supervision of Susan, upon which the intercessionary prayers were affixed. The whole was, of course, followed by a bring and share tea. A great event and a wonderful opportunity to meet worshippers from other denominations both during the service and at the tea afterwards. We hope to repeat this event in the future. Thank you everyone who contributed to making this such a success.

Build the largest Globe in Wiltshire and Food for Thought Birthday party

<img style="float: left; About fifty people joined together in this month's Food for Thought at the Village Hall on Sunday 9th May. Michael, Sara and Elizabeth led the service which started with some great praise songs containing biblical quotes in them, a humorous look at the story of the Creation and Adam and Eve (a short play written by Sara with thanks to the late Rob Lacey for some of the ideas), a biblical maths quiz and numbers quiz, followed by a good old fashioned favourite bingo. We also looked at some of the wackier and more amusing stories and proverbs - did you know, for instance, that there is a Proverb which reads "You should give beer to the perishing" or that "It is better to live on the corner of the roof of a house than in the house itself with a quarrelsome wife". The stories included a talking donkey, bears which attacked disrespectful youths for calling Elisha "baldy" and what the ancient Israelites could do to rebellious sons! All this was followed by bangers, mash and beans. Thanks again to all who contributed to making it such a successful and fun afternoon.

Utterly Wet for Uganda

We managed to raise just over £110 last Sunday by hand washing more than 20 cars at a fiver a time! For just £5 the lucky driver had his volcanic-ashed vehicle washed and polished whilst enjoying tea and cake inside the Village Hall's Committee Room. Each £5 collected is destined to be used to buy a mosquito net for a family in the Ugandan District of Rukungiri under the Project Uganda charity initiative. With appropriate songs, prayers, a talk and a testimony, the basic theme was that you cannot hide from God and you need to always trust Him to guide and support you. Continuing the "fishy" theme, prayers were written on fish-shaped pieces of paper and placed in a huge fishing net. The afternoon ended appropriately with everyone being served with fish fingers, chips and mushy peas - the chips being very popular with the youngsters. In all, 180 fish fingers were cooked!

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; Entitled ‘Mission Shaped Ministry’ (MSM), the course encourages creative forms of Church, and involvement in local communities.

The course, run in over 30 centres throughout the UK, has already attracted interest from the USA and Canada. MSM has been endorsed by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Rowan Williams, the General Secretary of the Methodist Church Dr. Martyn Atkins, and TV presenter Diane-Louise Jordan.

By the end of next year, an estimated 2,000 people will have taken part in the sessions.

MSM has a growing and broader ownership across major church movements, including the Church of England Diocese of Salisbury and the Southampton Methodist District. The Corfe Mullen course is a collaboration between Fresh Expressions, a national inter-denominational initiative encouraging new types of churches, and H3art Rhythms, an initiative in the parish of Corfe Mullen.

Trainers for the January course include Dr. Kings, Director of Training for Fresh Expressions Andrew Roberts, and Lucy Moore, author of ‘Messy Church’, a book encouraging low-cost creative projects for local children and families.

Dr. Kings said today: “I’m very excited about this course because it means the church will get out among local people, with creative ideas and new-found enthusiasm. It will encourage real contact between church and community in a relevant way. I’m all for it.”

Kath Atkins, MSM Administrator, added: “Our motto is ‘changing church for a changing world’, and we’re seeing new congregations springing up alongside more traditional churches. Projects are being established as a direct response to local needs. We have a message of hope in these troubled times, and we are making a real, positive difference in people’s lives.”

For more information, contact Hilary Richards at H3art Rhythms:
01202 658817, office@h3artrhythms.org.uk

Websites:
H3art Rhythms
Fresh Expressions: mission shaped ministry
Messy Church

Issued by Rob Marshall
Church of England
Diocese of Salisbury
24 Hour Media Office 01482 562 455
http://www.salisbury.anglican.org/

FFT Lantern Procession 2009

Great time tonight , really looking forward to Christmas now!<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; I would gladly recommend it.”

These are just some of the thought of past guests on our local Team Alpha courses.

Who is it for?
The Alpha course is designed primarily for people who aren't churchgoers and each course is open to everyone who would like to attend. Most courses attract a diverse range of guests of different ages and backgrounds, holding many different viewpoints. Over 7,000 courses are currently running across the UK in rural and urban settings, including every major UK city. Guests attend for a wide variety of reasons - some want to investigate whether God exists; others are concerned about what happens after death. Some people have particular questions that they would like to discuss; others want to understand other peoples' beliefs or would like to explore what the purpose of life is. Many guests have never been to church, others may have attended church occasionally but feel they have never really understood the basics of the Christian faith.

How the course works?
The course is based around small groups of about 12 people, hosted by one or two leaders whose role is to facilitate and encourage discussion. We will be meeting in a home on Wednesday evenings. Whatever the course size, people tend to remain in the same small groups for the duration of the course so they can get to know each other, continue discussions and deepen friendships. The whole course usually lasts for 10 weeks, with a day away in the middle.
Each session begins with a meal - a chance to get to know others in the small group. There is then a short talk, which looks at a different aspect of the Christian faith each week. This is followed by a time of discussion in the small groups, where everyone is welcome to contribute their opinion, ask questions and discuss with the rest of the group. The emphasis is upon exploration and discovery in a relaxed and informal environment.
There is no charge for attending the Alpha course, although we do ask for a contribution towards the food.

Want to find out more?
The next course begins on the evening of Wednesday 7th October.
There is a pre-Alpha social taking place on the evening of Wed 30th Sept (Farley Village Hall), where a guest speaker will be talking about Alpha in more detail. There will also be an opportunity to hear from previous guests about their experience of the course.

Alternatively, please contact Hamish Mckeown (01980 862455) or Linda Carter (01980 863635) for more details.

New FFT dates

Sept 27th : Back to Church Sunday

Quiz at end of Back to Church Sunday service

Cakes, muffins and doughnuts

Oct 25th : Bible Bingo and Bangers

Bingo with a biblical theme

Bangers and Beans served afterwards

Nov 29th : Lantern building workshop

Build a wicker & More people aware of what Project Uganda is and what it is doing
5. New people meeting each other
6. Great fun generated
7. An extra inch on my waist line because of all the yummy cakes!

We washed 32 cars and raised £167.50 for Project Uganda, that is enough mosquito nets for 64 people! Jamie and Jackie Biggins brought a brilliant stand that illustrated all the excellent work the project has done and how each initiative is started and led by the people in Uganda. It was good to see there was a lot a "buzz" within the coffee room and outside washing the cars. We may well do a charity car wash again as we have all the equipment and experience now!
If anyone has a suggestion about how we "Food For Thought" can help raise money for the charities in Winterslow then please share your ideas with us, we would love to help in anyway possible

Hand Car Wash for Project Ugnada

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; It’s been a great opportunity to meet new faces, catch up with old friends and have fun together. We’ve had everything from glorious sunset dips in the pool to swift dashes through the rain from chef to house, sausages in one hand, brolly in the other.

By the time you read this September will be well underway and we’ll all be looking forward to getting Food for Thought back on the agenda. Our first meeting will be on 23rd September. As always , all are welcome and we mean all. Old, young, singles, families. We’re here to create a place where you can explore faith comfortably, no judgement, no pressure, …..a place to find some food for thought. Therefore, it is important to refresh your memory on the etiquette of this sublime outdoor cooking as it's the only type of cooking a real man will do, probably because there is an element of danger involved.

When a man volunteers to do the Barbecue, usually on a Saturday, the following chain of events is put into motion:

Barbecue Routine

1) The woman buys the food.

2) The woman makes the salad, prepares the vegetables, and makes dessert.

3) The woman prepares the meat for cooking, places it on a tray along with the necessary cooking utensils and sauces, and takes it to the man who is lounging beside the grill - beer in hand.

Here comes the important part:

4) THE MAN PLACES THE MEAT ON THE GRILL.

More routine....

5) The woman goes inside to organise the plates and cutlery.

6) The woman comes out to tell the man that the meat is burning. He thanks her and asks if she will bring another beer while he deals with the situation.

Important again:

7) THE MAN TAKES THE MEAT OFF THE GRILL AND HANDS IT TO THE WOMAN.

More routine.....

8) The woman prepares the plates, salad, bread, utensils, napkins, sauces and brings them to the table.

9) After eating, the woman clears the table and does the dishes.

And most important of all:

10) Everyone PRAISES the MAN and THANKS HIM for his cooking efforts.

11) The man asks the woman how she enjoyed ' her night off.' And, upon seeing her annoyed reaction, concludes that there's just no pleasing some women....

Footnote

If the Barbecue catches fire then the man gets out the hosepipe.
Meanwhile, the woman calls the fire brigade.

Even More Food For Thought……………

More Food For Thought……………

Thursday evening, late back for dinner, we burst through the door and my ten year old son flies into the study,

“Blast – I missed Sam!” -

“What do you mean?” (I’m in the hall struggling with bags) -

“I was meant to meet him at church” -

“Huh?”

“To pray together.”

Now at this point I put the bags down and a bemused and somewhat stunned look comes over my face – bear with me! –

“We were meant to meet and pray together, anyway, it doesn’t matter, he needs prayer points but I’ve already got loads, I’ve done tons of praying”

Ever had that feeling that time has stood still and you’re hovering in another dimension? Sam’s a lovely boy but I wouldn’t put him down as a big prayer. The lesson in theology from the study goes on ……….

“With all my praying I‘ve enough points for a really thick skin – to protect me from attack!”

Wow, it was slightly surreal, but it was good, made sense, Nils would be proud.

“It’s great, I’ve so many prayer points I can go and attack people now and steal all their stuff – yeh – I’m well sorted!”

Now – yeh, you see – I see what you’re thinking. The philosophy starts to crumble and I go into the study to try and make sense of life. Samuel is on Runescape.com – the internet game world where he and his class mates meet up to chill out after the only too real world of school. Do any of the rest of you find this weird? Anyway, hopes of a son in the priesthood vanish and I shove Samuel over to create myself a character, - if you can’t beat’em join’em. Half an hour later I’m still wandering around in a virtual forest. I’ve made three fires, burnt my prawns twice and driven a pick axe into an unsuspecting miner who happened to walk in front of my iron ore (I’m attempting to smelt a sword, I haven’t even found church yet). Well, hey ho! What can we learn from all this? You know what - I’ll let you decide.

Back to the reason for writing this article. Food for Thought (FFT)! Come, COME - it’s great!– well so says the feedback handed in from the last meeting. Loads of “Yes we want it to continue”, “yes, more of the same” etc etc. “More cake!” (I question the sanity of this one - lack of cake is not one of our problems). We’ve got loads of good stuff ahead. June 24th will be our last meeting before the summer, a bit of a celebration that we’ve made it this far, BBQ, fun for all the family etc. Summer will be regular picnics, BBQ’s etc. Next term maybe smaller groups in addition to FFT where we can ask the big questions in open and free discussion. Who knows, keep watching, we’re currently building the FFT website, www.foodforthought.gb.com so take a look. Anyway, back to June 24th, get yourself along, bring the children, gain more prayer points and you never know what you can do! Enough prayer points and you certainly won’t burn your prawns!

Food for Thought –What in Heavens’ Names That?

Why don’t people go to church? - that’s the question we set out to answer almost a year ago when we first got together to establish Food For Thought.

According to my mother-in law the answer’s simple. Posed with the question on recent stop while globetrotting between Trinnidad and Sweden, she paused thoughtfully over her coffee and answered – ‘It’s drafty!’

Well……...mmm..you know, - I’m not buying it. There’s got to be more to it than that. Having sat through a match at Old Trafford with the snow settling on my head there’s one thing for certain – it takes more than a draft to put people off.

So what is it,- people don’t believe in God? – well, see – that doesn’t hold up. 98% of Winterslow village in a 1998 survey, given the choice, registered themselves as Christian rather than ticking the box , no religion. You believe in God alright.

OK –they’re just not interested!

If anything – the opposites true. On John Humphries recent radio 4 programme – Search for God, the BBC was inundated with more emails, texts and letters than they could cope with. Listening figures soared. They didn’t know what hit them. Not interested? I doubt it.

Well - OK, maybe we don’t have all the answers but my guess is that there is no one answer. There are many, - big, small, profound and downright trivial. We know, - we wrote them all out, just to see how many we could avoid. Everything from weak tea to threats of eternal damnation. I don’t know which is worse! No seriously, we filled a big page – and we made that our starting point.

So why do we want you to come? well you know, - you don’t have too, but it would be nice. We,ve got good coffee, short sermons, maybe no sermons, chilled out dress code, stuff for the children to do. But really, the biggest reason, because we know it’s good. We know that life can be spiritual, that it works well with God. You don’t have to agree, we don’t ask you to – it’s your journey, it’s your choice. But Food for Thought might help, help to think through the questions that matter – and have fun together. First meeting January 28th, village hall, minimum drafts, good coffee, we’ll even go easy on the damnation- hey we might not mention it at all. Come and try it, no pressure, you might like it. We really hope you do!

Susan

More Food for Thought!

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; to see what worked, what didn’t, what needs changed etc……..
How can we get baguettes fresh enough on Sunday afternoon? how can we prevent children falling over power leads? Who will source sixty good sized pebbles for the prayer session? ( anyone whose been to March’s meeting will understand this?), how big should the words be on the screen?

On second thoughts perhaps you wouldn’t like to be there, they do go on a bit! But feedback is good ( Food for Thought – feedback, get the connection, good eh!) and we need as much of it as we can get. So far, what we have got is positive, and we hope it will continue that way.

But meetings aren’t just about ironing out the small issues, finding solutions to the practical questions, they’re about the hard questions too. How do we talk about God in a way which is relevant, how do we talk about prayer in a way that will feel comfortable to those who find it difficult ground, how do we care for those who come, …really care for them, how do we make this a place for people in Winterslow, a welcoming, fun and unthreatening place to meet together and talk about spiritual things.

Time will tell, but we’re learning all the time. Someone asked me to mention where children come in. Children are welcome, and we really mean, welcome. This is one place where you don’t need to worry, you don’t need to worry about noise, moving around, finding something to entertain them. One of the primary reasons for setting Food for Thought up was to provide a meeting where families who don’t maybe go to church could feel comfortable and experience God together, on everyone’s level. So bring the children, please, they’re every bit as much a part of what we’re doing as you are.

It just remains to say a big thankyou to the Methodist Church for their reference to our meeting in the last magazine and to reiterate how much we pray Gods blessing on their new venture, Souper Church as well. We now know that having one type of service is no longer enough to connect to everyone’s experience of God, we need choice, ….choice of styles, times, venues etc and more choice is something to celebrate.

By the end of January this year, 600 churches had registered their involvement in providing a fresh expression of what church is, groups in housing estates, mums from toddler groups, Saturday night discussion churches, coffee and Sunday papers breakfast churches. Why not come and see if our fresh expression of church is right for you and your family.

……….More Food For Thought

Well, with a couple of Food for Thought services under our belt we can now safely say, perhaps it wasn’t such a crazy idea after all. Yes, people do indeed want to think about God, they do enjoy church in a fresh way; they do like doughnuts (we’re certain of that!) So where do we go from here. Keep doing what we’re doing I guess. Six services down the line, we’ll sit back and think… think, is it something our community wants, is it something we need? Time will tell, but so far your response has been, yes, we think it might be.

So who has come so far? People who go to church, people who don’t go to church, people who are curious, people who saw the leaflet through the door and thought, maybe… just maybe, this might have something for me. People whose friends go, people who come alone, people with children (lots of children!). People like us. Just ordinary people, enjoying some time, some food, some music and some thoughts together. We welcome suggestions, things we’ve left out or could do differently ...........but so far, you seem to like it.

“Nice relaxed atmosphere”

“Not one of my children was bored, even my 13 year old son”

“Music was nice and modern”

And it goes without saying, people liked the food!

Well, onto Food for Thought number three. Will the hall be packed out again,? Perhaps, perhaps not. But you know, numbers are not really important to us. What is important is that we’re offering choice. All Saints church is brilliant, it’s full, it’s vibrant. Along with all of our village churches it has supported our community for centuries….but it’s not for all. We at all Saints know that. We know that to offer a place for others to meet God we’ve got to get out of that building and do something new. Something in a fresh way, in a place where you feel comfortable, where you feel at home. It would be so great…..if you could come.

Susan

More food for thought….

By the time you read this (articles are always written a month in advance), we will be meeting to review how our first Food for Thought gathering has been received. All the months of careful thought, planning and expectation managed to culminate in a flurry of last minute panic and “Why did we ever get into this” thoughts. Why did we ever get into this? Good question! We’re a funny mix of people, I’m sure no-one would argue with you there, solicitors, housewives, artists, chemists, teachers, a mixture of ages, backgrounds and interests, so why are we meeting in the village hall on a Sunday, why at four o’clock, why aren’t we dozing under the Sunday papers after a morning of hymn singing in the beautiful, historic surroundings of all Saints church?

Actually - the answers quite simple. We know not everyone in this village, -the friends we know and love, the faces we greet – not everyone can feel comfortable in that beautiful old stone building on the hill. For some, childhood memories have removed any chance of contact with the traditional church again. For others fears of not matching up, not fitting in or simply, not identifying with the language of traditional church life has meant that, when life raises questions, the traditional church, sadly, is not always the place they turn for answers.

The Anglican church recognises this and at the turn of the millennium, began to explore new ways, new “fresher” expressions of being church. This has resulted in groups of people, all over the UK meeting in schools, toddler groups, supermarkets and homes to explore together, a faith in God. And so, our group came together. All different people, but all committed members of All Saints in Winterslow. For us the traditional church has great warmth and meaning, but we know that not all people can see it that way. And so we decided to set up Food for Thought. New, but familiar premises, a new time, to suit more people and hopefully, a new approach. We won’t have any structured service to get lost in, no dress code to uphold, plenty of stuff to keep the children happy and engaged, and no pressure. A place for you to explore and enjoy God, at your own pace, in your own way.

Oh, and the Food thing. - doughnuts and coffee, sharing meals together, BBQs in the summer… sound good? Why not come this month and see what we mean, if there’s something you think we could do differently, let us know, we’re learning as we go

Susan
